The Selfless Scholar Award

Minnesota Masonic Charities believes that character counts just as much as grades. That’s why we created The Selfless Scholar, a unique scholarship that recognizes students who consistently go above and beyond to show compassion, integrity, and kindness in their daily lives.

Unlike traditional scholarships that are based on GPA or extracurricular activities, this $5,000 award is about character. Here’s how it works:

  • A student nominates a peer from their school who embodies selflessness, empathy, and everyday      leadership.
  • If selected, both the nominator and the nominee will receive a $2,500 scholarship.

We’re not looking for one-time moments of kindness, such as helping someone who dropped their books or cheering up a friend who had a bad day. While those things are lovely, this award is for students who demonstrate a pattern of compassion and service, making their school and community better through consistent, intentional actions.

Examples of strong nominees might include:

  • A student who organizes rides or homework help for classmates without ever being asked.
  • Someone who has quietly spent their lunch hours volunteering in the special education classroom.
  • A peer who regularly advocates for students who are excluded or overlooked and creates space for everyone to belong.
  • A person who consistently puts others before themselves and inspires others to do the same, not for recognition, but because it’s the right thing to do.

If you know someone like this, we want to hear their story, and yours. You don’t need to write like a professional; you need to tell us from the heart why this person is a Selfless Scholar.

Minnesota Blue Lodges or Order of the Eastern Star Chapters in good standing may apply for matching funds up to $3,000 annually for awarding Community Scholarships.
